Carlos Negron, a life long resident of Jersey City, was in his thirteenth year as a Jersey City Fire Fighter when he made the supreme sacrifice. Although off duty, Carlos went to the assistance of fellow fire fighters, who were raising a ladder to the third floor of a building involved in a 3 Alarm fire on March 20, 1993. The ladder became charged with high voltage from an electrical cable, fatally injuring Carlos and seriously injuring another fire fighter. Carlos left behind a widow and two children. He had been a popular and active member of the community, spending much of his free time as an officer of the Gong Club, Jersey City’s fire buff organization, and the Hispanic Fire Fighters’ Society. Following his death, a group of friends and fellow fire fighters organized the Carlos Negron Memorial Run, to preserve his memory. The inaugural race was held on October 2, 1993. The race is generously supported by the corporate community in the New Jersey area. All proceeds of the race are donated to the St. Barnabas Burn Foundation, Livingston, NJ. The Burn Center at St. Barnabas is the premier burn care facility in New Jersey. This race is dedicated to the support of quality burn care, the promotion of fire safety and preserving the memory of one of Jersey City’s bravest, Carlos Negron!
